There’s a (Local) App For That

29th May 2015

With over 1.2 million apps to choose from on your iPhone (1.3 million for android users), it can be tough to find the best ones to fill up those 16 gigs (or 32GB you big spender). And even when you think you’ve found the perfect app, you find it only services select cities like New York, Austin, or San Francisco. Good news Colorado, your frustrating searches are over.

A great place to start is by checking out these 5 great apps made BY Coloradans, FOR Coloradans. You’re welcome in advance.

#1 – “Press”

For all you type-A coffee enthusiasts, Press combines your love for lattes with your obsession to organize. Take detailed notes about your coffee’s journey from seed to sip. Where did it come from, who roasted it, how did you brew it, and what did it look like? Not only can Press help you categorize your cup o’ joe, it helps you brew it with an in-app timer made by Denver’s own Corvus Coffee. Combine that with your favorite #campcoffee for the perfect brew.

#2 – “Best Buds”

Best Buds was founded in early 2013 to help medical marijuana patients accumulate rewards at their favorite dispensary, but it soon became clear that the app could be used in a bigger way. In August 2014, the app was updated to function as a search for weedies (foodies of the weed industry?) so that they could easily find which nearby dispensaries carried their favorite strain or product. Users can also rate dispensaries and strains of weed they have smoked. The app includes a very user friendly design and beautiful bud pics.

#3 – “High there”

Another reefer madness app, this one is essentially a more platonic version of Tinder for Denver weed lovers. Users upload a photo of themselves and describe their cannabis preferences. Are you high energy or low energy when smoking? Do you use a vaporizer or smoke a blunt? Are you into nature and culture while high or are you more of a chow down on pizza and play video games type? High There! hopes that your answers to these questions will ensure that you and your new bud will have a great experience together.
Because ya know – you gotta make sure your date is dope.

#4 – “Adventure Project”

If you love exploring all the outdoor goodness that our wild state has to offer, Adventure Project’s apps are for you. Separated into four apps – Mountain Project, Hiking Project, Trail Run Project, and Powder Project (and MTB project, a 5th app for android users) – the creators of Adventure Projects use data to get you outside. To Adventure Projects founders, the need for these apps was simple. “We are bikers. We are climbers. We ski, run, hike, and revel in the mountains. But most of all, we are nerds. Big time. We design products we wish existed, then we build them, and then we use them to guide our outdoor adventures.” Well said.

#5 – “OrderUp”

Okay so this one isn’t exactly based in Colorado, but work with us here! Have you ever used “Hungry Buffs” or “MileHighMenus”? Both were food delivery services that allowed users to order from dozens of local businesses. In order to take advantage of better technology, the founders, brothers Mike and Dan Rolland, have joined forces with “Orderup”, a similar platform that is hosted by cities across the country. To use Orderup, there is a 95 cent processing fee as well as a delivery fee – which varies but never exceeds $4.99. Although the app isn’t technically based in Denver, it is a great platform to support local restaurants. We dare you to think of another way you can support your local economy while wearing pajamas and watching your fav Netflix series.
