The Denver Lowdown: The Running of the Gays

24th September 2015

You know what they say about the weekend… Wait… do they say anything about the weekend? I don’t think they do, but they should. Or maybe they do, and I’m just not aware. Hmm…

Whatever, we don’t have time for this nonsense, it’s time to figure out what your plans for the weekend are! We spoke with those beautiful people at EveryBlock to round up all the hot weekend activities for you to plug into your calendar.

So, whatcha doin’ this weekend?

Friday

Grow Our Own Grains

Who doesn’t love grains? Who doesn’t love a healthy serving of barley, wheat, oats, rye, qunioa, corn, millet, amaranth, or sorghum (whatever the hell that is)? Wouldn’t you just love to grow all that stuff in your own yard? “But I can’t, I don’t live on a farm.” You don’t have to if you check out this instruction course on how to harvest, thresh, winnow, and cook these grains that are often not grown within city limits. Grow your own grains right at home! // 4 p.m., $20 suggested; Denver Sustainability Park; 2500 Lawrence St.

The Denver Lowdown: A Very Special Taylor Swift Edition

3rd September 2015

This is the weekend, my friends. This is what we’ve all been waiting for. This Sunday, Denver will be graced by the presence of none other than the pop of country music, the slayer of Yeezy, the princess of nice, and the girl we all wish we could be. The haters may hate-hate-hate, but we love-love-love Taylor Swift.

Yes, my fellow Swifities. Our favorite pop star will be performing her 1989 World Tour right here in Denver for TWO NIGHTS. This news has got us like:

I know, I know. I can barely contain my fangirl, it’s ridiculous. But while T-Swizzle making her much-awaited appearance is THE event of the weekend (Month? Year? Ever?!?!), there are other pretty awesome events (brought to you by EveryBlock) going down that you should totally check out. It’s okay, Tay Tay approves.

Placing Art at People’s Feet: Redline Explores Play for Summer Exhibition

12th August 2015

image

While the summer sun has been pouring down in Denver, you may have noticed the painted hopscotch course dotting the streets over the last couple of weeks. Seven sites across the city of Denver, in various neighborhoods, were chosen by artist Agustina Woodgate as part of a public art installation in conjunction with the Biennial of the Americas. The hopscotch course served as a visible chain linking neighborhoods across the city and invited Denver residents to set aside their normal routine and hop to their destination. It’s summer after all, let’s play!

Peak Playing Cards

Karl Larson decided to spice up the typical playing card deck for something that any fellow Coloradan would appreciate. Peak Playing Cards are designed to represent Colorado’s 53 mountains that reach at least above 14,000 feet above sea level. Represented by a Day Deck and a Night Deck, each card on one side features mountains reaching toward a cloud-filled sky engulfed in either rays of sun or stars. Cards are organized according to mountain elevation; highest peaks are aces and lowest are twos and jokers.

Selfie Culture Gets A Little More … Cultured

Anyone who has ever been to a museum knows about their strict “no photography” rules. From fossil exhibits to art galleries, you’re sure to see signs that read, “No, Photography Please.” But as smartphones continue to advance and as more and more people turn to social media, museums like the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (2001 Colorado Blvd) have begun to relax that policy a little, even encourage it in some cases.

Because of the ever-valuable word of mouth marketing that comes from selfies and use of social media, museums have begun to see a benefit in allowing photography within their exhibits.

To add a little insight into how this best benefits museums, we spoke to Maura O’Neal, Communications and Media Relations Manager at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Innovator’s Peak: What led to some local museums’ decision to allow, even encourage, photography or selfies within museum exhibits?

Maura O’Neal: I can’t speak for all museums, but the Denver Museum of Nature and Science works to encourage photography whenever possible while maintaining its high standards of care for its collection items and ensuring a positive experience for all guests. Humans are naturally social beings; we want to share our experiences with others. Photography paired with the immediate ability to share images and other information through social media platforms helps us satisfy this desire. For us, encouraging the use of photography immediately creates thousands of ambassadors who aren’t just telling people what a great time they had at the Museum, they are showing people what a great time they are having in near-real time. That’s powerful.

The Innovation Illusion

29th September 2014

My grandmother loved Bill Cosby. Rarely did I make a visit to her house as a kid when there wasn’t an episode of The Cosby Show playing on the television twice as loud as it should have been (only so she could hear, what she called, the genius of Mr. Cosby from the kitchen where she smoked a cigarette and cooked us kielbasa).  To this day I can still hear her raspy old voice praising his wisdom in the episode in which Cliff Huxtable hilariously teaches a young Theo a thing or two about budgeting using Monopoly money.

“How about that one with the Monopoly money and how kids don’t know anything?!” she would hoot and holler, “Hilarious!!”

I know, Grandma. I watched it with you.
