The Denver Lowdown: How to Build an Atomic App

30th July 2015

Alright people let’s get this over with, we have weekends to plan. It’s Thursday, we’re tired, we’re hungry, and we’ve just about had enough of all this work stuff.

We at The Denver Lowdown and EveryBlock know you don’t always have the time to search around the vast, expansive internet for your weekend activities. So, we’ve done this clever little thing and rounded up a bunch of totally sweet things to do.

Why don’t you sit back and check out what’s going down at the Lowdown.

Friday:

Mobile App Hackathon

Got an idea for an app? Do you need an app built for your business? Do you like all apps all the time? Well, Mobile App Hackathon, an event produced by the AT&T Developer Program, is designed for attendees to build apps, compete for prizes across different categories, network with other app developers, and most importantly, get fed. Be sure to bring your laptop, skills, and ideas and be ready to collaborate with some smart cookies. (photo) // Day One 6 p.m., Day Two 10 a.m., Free, Galvanize Boulder, 1035 Pearl St., 5th Floor.

Amazing Scavenger Hunt Adventure

Take one part Amazing Race, one part local history, add a little three-hour tour and you’ve got yourself one hell of a scavenger hunt. Guided by any smartphone, teams bob and weave throughout Denver to check out gems of the city both well-known and hidden, solving clues and completing challenges all while learning a little bit more about Denver’s history. Curls on the Block

What do people have against curls? Nothing, that’s what. Curls on the Block encourages everyone to embrace, explore, and empower their curls. There will be featured guests, salon experts ready for hair consultations, a DIY hair product area, local vendors offering samples and coupons for their sweet stuff, and a photobooth (natch) to show off those fabulous curls. Saturday:

Putt-Putt Golf in Park Hill Branch Library

Get out that Callaway putter and your favorite Titleist ball and hop on down to the Park Hill Branch Library with your whole family for some no kidding around 9 hole round putt-putt golf! Jack Nicklaus-wannabes are encouraged to sign up for tee times in advance by calling 720-865-0250, but walk ins are totally welcome to take part in the fun and prizes. Color Run Denver

Focus less on the arduous and repetitive nature of a 5k and toss in a little color! Literally! The Color Run is a five kilometer, untimed race in which thousands of super fun participants (aka “Color Runners”) are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. The only rule is that you wear white at the starting line and finish completely covered in color. (photo// 8 a.m., Free, Coors Field, 2001 Blake St.

How to Build a Website: HTML & CSS for Beginners

Do you want to learn how to build your own website? Have you already mastered the art of the Tumblr but are now looking to play with the big boys? Then this two-day course is for you. Session 1 will go through the basics of setting up a text editor, how websites work, and an introduction to HTML and CSS. Session 2 moves on the basics and eventually you’ll be formatting and laying out your website. Get your website on this weekend! Sunday:

City Park Jazz: Ellyn Rucker Trio with Myra Warren and guest vocalists Wendy Fopeano and Joni Janak

What better way to finish off your weekend than with some City Park Jazz. This Sunday, the Ellyn Rucker Trio with Myra Warren and guest vocalists Wendy Fopeano and Joni Janak will be performing, rain or shine. Pianist Ellyn Rucker has been playing jazz in Denver since the ‘70s, starting with the Robin’s Nest on Lookout Mountain. She’s performed all over the world, from the U.K. and Europe to Holland to Shanghai. (photo) // 5 p.m., Free, City Park, 2100 S. Colorado Blvd.

Well now that you’ve got yourself a tech-filled, innovative, jazzy, colorful, putt-putt scavenger hunt kinda weekend, you better rest up this Thursday night and get ready to blow the doors off soon as quitting time rolls around on Friday.

Have a beautiful weekend, everybody!
