The Denver Lowdown: The Recycled Tai Chalk Jazz HARDWARE Show!
4th June 2015
Good morning everyone, and welcome to a brand new weekend in a brand new month, which means it’s time for a brand new Denver Lowdown. Who’s excited? I’m excited. Are you excited? Well you better be.
Let’s check out what’s going down at the Lowdown.
Friday
Auraria Campus Taijiquan (“Tai Chi”)
It’s a little cliché to run straight for happy hour once your workweek ends, so why not relax on a Friday? When’s the last time you did some Tai Chi? Doesn’t matter, because Auraria Campus Tajiquan will work on the first Chen style form, spine and hip alignment, as well as drill movement while rooted. Don’t know what any of that means? That’s OK: This course is for all skill levels.
Whether it’s Tai Chi or Chai Tea, kick your shoes off this Friday and relaaaaaaax. (photo) // 5 p.m., Free, Confucius Institute, 1030 St. Francis Way.
First Friday Art Walk: The Green Show
This First Friday, one person’s trash is another’s recycled art project. This is, like, Denver’s biggest art night. This month, Green is all about celebrating recycled art and all things repurposed. The artists must create something that exists in the world around them. Paint exists in the world, but I get what they’re driving at. So check out some kickass art and think about climate change in a way that won’t leave you completely bummed out. (photo) // 6 p.m., $10, Denver Art Society: Gallery, 734 Santa Fe Drive.
Saturday
Denver Chalk Art Festival
So you’re walking down Colfax Avenue, minding your own business, until you take one wrong step and suddenly FALL INTO A MASSIVE, GAPING CREVASSE. Cool. But hold on: It’s just the Denver Chalk Art Festival. False alarm, everyone. Step carefully this weekend around some really impressive chalk art all over the sidewalk in a fun, funky area. Because who doesn’t love a little sidewalk art? (photo) // 2 p.m., Free, 1430 Larimer Square
HARDWARE
No, this is not my long-awaited, highly anticipated hardware store musical “HARDWARE!” (coming to community theatres everywhere this summer), this is an actual thing. Mile High Horrors presents HARDWARE for one night only. Screened from director Richard Stanley’s personal 35mm film print, HARDWARE is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a disassembled android rebuilds itself and sets out to complete its mission: destroy all humans. This sci-fi thriller combines ample doses of nihilism, heavy metal, and the cybernetic violence we’ve all come to love so much. (photo) // 10 p.m., $11, Denver Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave.
Sunday
Denver Bitcoin Center Open House!
What is a bitcoin? Would you like to learn what bitcoin is from someone who understands bitcoin (as opposed to someone who doesn’t)? Well, the Denver Bitcoin Center would like to invite you to come spend some time with bitcoin people and see how bitcoin is integrating with local businesses. Sounds digital and educational. Jazz In The Park
Live jazz, photography, outdoors, and food (probably). What better way is there to spend your Sunday afternoon? This is a real festival atmosphere featuring jazz vocalist Selina Albright. If you can’t make this one, fear not, there are other awesome and unusual bands scheduled for later this season. Rain or shine, make sure you’re at City Park for some ever-soothing jazz. Sounds like you have an eventful, eclectic weekend that will stimulate your creativity and relax your mind, all while checking out some of Denver’s best hot spots. And there you were, all worried that you’d have nothing to do this weekend except be boring. Worry no more. And if you’re in a really tight spot, check out your neighborhood happenings on EveryBlock. They got your back and them some.
Have a lovely weekend, rascals.
