The Denver Lowdown: Memorial Weekend Shenanigans

21st May 2015

Good morning, good people of Denver! It’s another edition of The Denver Lowdown, where we celebrate all the upcoming weekend events and clue you in on what’s going down. This weekend is particularly awesome because it’s Memorial weekend, a three-day (or four if you’re lucky) tribute to our fallen service men and women filled with barbecues, American flags, and long evenings with friends and family.

There’s a lot to do this Memorial weekend for everyone from fishing fans to art lovers. So, let’s check out what you’re doing this weekend.

Saturday:

1. Free Fly Fishing Clinics at Orvis Denver Retail Store (2701 E 1st Ave, Denver, CO 80206)

If you’re a fly fishing fan (and I’m sure you are), Denver’s Orvis retail store is offering free fly fishing lessons all through June most Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am-12pm. If you’re looking for a family activity that may or may not end in dinner, these free lessons are totally for you. Classes are complimentary to the public, but RSVPs are necessary. I mean, you can’t just roll up without letting them know, that’s impolite. You can register online or call Orvis for specific class times and anything else you might like to know. (photo)

2. Bee’s, Butterflies, and other Busy Bugs (7030 Garrison St, Arvada, CO 80004)

It’s not always about the honey bees, guys. From 2-3:30pm, The Majestic View Nature Center will be teaching kids ages 5-10 the importance of plant pollination and helping all the pollinators in our own backyards. Make your own pollinator house to take home and encourage these important insects, like bees and butterflies, to spend more time in your yard. (photo)

3. Kim Dorland: Everyday Monsters (1485 Delgany St, Denver, CO 80202)

If you’re looking to check out some art this weekend, Kim Dorland’s Everyday Monsters will be showing this Saturday from 12-7pm at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Kim Dorland is the kind of painter who takes conventional subjects like landscapes, sunsets, domestic scenes, yada yada yada, and brings a new, darker twist to it, like zombies, Bigfoot, or even Jason from the Friday the 13th series. If you enjoy a darker look in art, plus zombies, Kim Dorland’s show is probably up your alley. (photo)

4. Rope @ John Hand Theatre (7653 E 1st Place, Denver, CO 80230)

There’s always room for an exciting, thrill ride of a show. Rope, by Patrick Hamilton and directed by Bernie Cardell, is the story of two men who decide to murder a classmate and hide the body in an antique chest. During a cocktail party celebrating their getting away with murder, one of the men gets a little self-assured and may even give their plan away. Based on the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, Rope will show at the John Hand Theatre from 7:30 to 10pm. (photo)

Sunday:

5. The Five Points / Wrapped Around My Soul (721 Santa Fe Dr, Denver, CO 80204)

The return of the a cappella musical phenomenon (that isn’t Pitch Perfect) featuring the sounds of the 50s, 60s, and 70s will show from 2-4pm at the Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center. (photo)

And just like that, you’ve got some plans this exciting Memorial weekend. Enjoy free fly fishing lessons and catch your own dinner, take your kids to learn about the importance of pollinating insects, get a little twisted at Kim Dorland’s art show, sit on the edge of your seat at a Hitchcockesque play, and wrap up the weekend with some good old fashioned a cappella. And then there’s that sweet, sweet Monday off.

Have a fantastic three-day weekend, everybody!
